STUDiO1COMiCS is sponsoring an art contest open to all fans of the comic-book medium.
Five (5) aspiring artists will have their work featured on/in special-edition titles of our flagship book 'A Hollow Man'. This contest is open to all participants who have, at the time of entry, no 'mainstream publishing credits' (further defined as: Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, or Image Comics work experience). Small-press publication credits are exempt from this stipulation.
In addition to the publishing credits, each winner will be featured on our website (
[link]), be assigned a company-sponsored email account, receive one case of the book they are featured on and be invited to join our regular creative team behind the table at the show of their choice.
All entries must be on 11" x 17" (standard size) illustration board or bristol heavy-bond paper. Image area must be confined within a 10" x 15" border. Artwork may be submitted as pencil only, pencil and ink, handpainted, or as a digital image. Both black-and-white and full-color entries will be accepted.
There are no content guidelines (other than no nudity) - a knowledgable artist intent on making a name for themselves in this industry knows what constitutes an effective cover or pin-up. What entrants need to be striving for with their entry is a powerful image that showcases the main character and the overall tone/mood of the story. There are many examples of this in the gallery on the official website (
[link]) and in the gallery on deviantart (
[link]).
Entries should be pin-up/cover-style art (a standalone piece of figure work highlighting a heroic pose, framed by architectural detailing, or otherwise celebrating the form of illustration we call comic art) featuring our flagship character 'A Hollow Man' (soon to be a comic-book and available at all comic shops who order the project). Further: for those who are completely unfamiliar with the story, the following is a brief overview of the project as it currently stands. One complete issue and two covers pencilled by Dan Parsons (Star Wars: Legacy, Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, King Kong, Indiana Jones, Battlestar Galactica, Harpy, Savage Planet, Razor, more). One issue pencilled by a Glass House Graphics artist named Rol Enriquez (entire issue available for preview in my gallery here on devart), created, written and inked by myself (X-51: Machine Man, Razor, Stryke, Morbid Angel, more). Two complete issues by regular-series artist Federico Zumel (a student of Joe Bennett), inks by Larry Welch (Top Cow inker/assists), lettered by Zach Matheny (Top Cow, Dynamite, Dark Horse). Cover by Nat Jones (Spawn: Dark Ages, Death Dealer, 30 Days Of Night, The Nail, Giant Monster). Pin-up work from the likes of Ken Hunt (LoveGun, Devlyn's Tales, more), Tim Tyler (Faust, Zero Tolerance, Engine, Blood Reign, Razor, more) and others. Upcoming cover by Norm Breyfogle (Batman, Detective Comics, Prime).
Here are some pertinent character/story notes:
The character is a dark, violent, serial-killing vigilante.
He gets a brick tattoo on his arms for everyone he kills.
Otherwise, he dresses like a street-wise criminal.
He drives a 1969 Pontiac GTO, black on black on black.
He kills using whatever means is available - by hand, knife, gun, vehicular homicide, strangulation, etc.
He is being pursued by two FBI profiling agents: Coleman Jacobs and Madison Rahne (see Rol's story pages for character's physical descriptions).
He is blind in his left eye from a glancing guhshot.
He has a split (dual) personality - the primary personality is Jathan Downard, the secondary personality is called 'A Hollow Man' - both of the personalities are complete bastards and both are utterly insane.
He has also been known to drive a motorcycle (Harley Davidson 'Sportster' as well.
Long black hair.
Numerous knife and gun-shot scars cover his body from head to toe.
Lives (primarily) in 'Jericho City' (a large metropolitan area).
Story takes place in 'real time' (time running concurrent with our own).
Smokes cigarettes all the time.
Is without remorse, guilt, or morals.
Likes to kill.
The artwork should be a 'generic' piece - no specific ties to any established story.
Some examples:
AHM leaning up against his car with the city in the background while smoking a cigarette (perhaps with a leg or arm sticking out of the trunk and a pool of blood beneath.
AHM with guns blazing in front of a brick wall (bullets impacting the wall around him).
A bloody AHM with a crazy/happy look on his face and a knife in one/both hand/s with dead bodies all around him.
Etc etc etc
All submissions must be sent to slickaway@slickaway.com with the following subject heading - ahollowman art contest.
Artwork should be sent at a size no greater than 3MB in size. Once winners have been determined, an email will be sent to the winners with information on how to send-in your piece of artwork. All winning entries will have their shipping paid for by STUDiO1COMiCS.
